After a full year of asking, Crain’s finally gets to tour the hitherto unseen “superstation” under Block 37 in the central Loop.
“Wow”, for several reasons.
Great photos by David Schalliol. Also, AIA Chicago has a tumblr? Huh.
Setting off a rush to document the modernist masterpiece by Betrand Goldberg, Northwestern University announced the demolition permit for Prentice Hospital was issued by the City of Chicago to Brandenburg Demolition on Monday, March 18, 2013.
According to Northwestern, “Subsequently, a permit was applied for from Cook County for asbestos abatement. This permit process takes ten days. Once the permit is issued Brandenburg will start removal of all hazardous materials from 333 East Superior using their licensed contractors, a process that will take several weeks. Brandenburg plans on erecting a construction fence around 333 East Superior [on] March 22, and complete it that day.”
Forced into obsolescence by Northwestern and the Commission on Chicago Landmarks, the pace of demolition gives little time for the documentation process of Prentice to be completed. The time to preserve Prentice’s memory is now.

I’m averaging four photos a month now, apparently.

At long last: Blisner, Ill., delivered to my doorstep by Daniel Shea himself. Worth the wait. This hand-made photo book is probably the nicest thing in my apartment now.
(If you don’t know what I’m talking about: there are a couple good interviews with Daniel about this book project here, here, and probably a few other places. You can see photos from this project at his website or his tumblr blog thing, too.)
